Gillian Rose Lectures on the Frankfurt School.

Here are a number of links to a lecture course Gillian Rose did on Lukacs, Bloch and the Frankfurt School. Whilst the quality of the recordings are rather shoddy and Rose makes many of the same arguments in her books, people may still find them of interest.

Update — I didn’t record off the cassette myself so I assumed the lectures had the same titles as the files I converted and uploaded. After a little research, the Sussex library catalog names these lectures as the following:

Although the recording quality and lengths of the following are different, I think they are both copies of The Frankfurt School; Cassette 1, Marxist modernism

The Frankfurt School lecture I part 1 and part 2.

The Frankfurt school lecture II part 1 and part 2.

The Frankfurt School; Cassette 2, The politics of realism: Georg Lukacs part 1. and part 2.

The Frankfurt School; Cassette 3, The greatness and decline of expressionism: Ernst Bloch part 1. and part 2.

The Frankfurt School; Cassette 5, The dialectic of the Enlightenment part 1 and part 2.

This means that the following lectures have not been included from the Frankfurt School Course:

‘Cassette 4, The battle over Walter Benjamin’.

Cassette 6, The search for style: Adorno, Kafka or Mann.’

The library also lists the following recordings from a different lecture series:

Sociological theory and methodology; Cassette 1, Introduction to critical theory

Sociological theory and methodology; Cassette 2, Does Marx have a method?

Sociological theory and methodology; Cassette 9, The unity of sociological thinking.

(cassettes 3-8 are not listed in the library catalog.)

  1. CB says:

Does she have any books that deal with Lukacs? A thinker who deserves more consideration than we give him.

    • HR says:

I’m not expert, but I know she discusses Lukacs in the essay on Reification in her Adorno book and Hegel Contra Sociology.

  2. Part two of the Bloch lecture is the same file as Lukacs.

  3. Sara says:

Bloch Part 2 seems to be missing, it’s just a copy of Lukacs part 1. Could you re-upload please. Also If you have any more of these they are appreciated! Thanks.

  4. Sara says:

    Hi! Thanks for the re-upload. I checked out your link and found this link using the new search;
